Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) shares experienced a significant surge on Wednesday, gaining 7.23% following the announcement of its price rationalization. This strong market response contrasts sharply with the broader market sentiment, as the Nifty 50 was down 0.11% at 22,697.85 during the same period. The stock has also gained 2.77% over the past week, outperforming the Nifty 500's 0.10% return, though it remains down 19% year-to-date. BCCL has a total market capitalisation of ₹15,307.56 crore as of October 14, 2026, according to NSE data.
Coal India Ltd's arm Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) announced on Tuesday that its board has approved the rationalisation of basic prices for certain grades of raw coking coal for the non-regulated sector. According to the company's regulatory filing, the rate hikes range from 0.1 per cent to 14 per cent over existing prices. The revision was approved by the board at a meeting held on October 13, 2026, and aims to correct what the company describes as "disproportionate inter-grade price differentials" in BCCL's raw coking coal pricing structure. The company noted that the revision covers Steel Grades (I and II), Direct Feed, PCC Washery Grades (W-II to W-VI) and HVMC Washery Grades (W-I to W-VI) for the non-regulated sector only. As per Mint, the price revision aims to correct price differences between various coal grades.
BCCL demonstrated strong operational performance in September 2026, with raw coal production increasing by 20.7% year-on-year to 2.57 million tonnes compared with 2.13 MT in the same month last year. The company's coking coal production stood at 2.49 MT during September, reflecting a 21.5% YoY jump from 2.05 MT in September 2025. However, BCCL recorded a marginal YoY decline in its non-coking coal production to 0.07 MT for the reporting month. This production growth comes as the company continues to strengthen its operational capabilities across its mining portfolio.
Separately, as per a regulatory filing dated September 25, BCCL signed a memorandum of understanding with Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) for increasing domestic coking coal production. The MoU was inked for joint operation of Indikatta Ramnagore Coal Block of SAIL and the East of Damagoria (Kalyaneshwari) Coal Block of BCCL in West Bengal. According to industry experts, the move will marginally increase the cost of domestic coking coal for steel manufacturers and other non-regulated buyers, though the immediate impact is likely to be modest given the limited scope of the revision and the targeted approach to correcting pricing imbalances within BCCL's coal portfolio.
Market analysts view the price movement as part of a bounce-back rally from the price support zone of ₹30 to ₹31 levels. Vipin Kumar, AVP research at Globe Capital Market, noted that the stock has started recovering after a sharp decline from the ₹44.40 levels. He expects a decisive close above ₹34 to be a positive development that could lead the index towards the ₹36 to ₹37 levels in the near term, with the ₹30 to ₹31 zone providing decent support on the downside. According to Mint, Mahesh M Ojha, VP Research & Business Development at Kantilal Chhaganlal Securities, suggests BCCL shares can be considered for near-term upside with a target price of ₹35.50, followed by ₹37 and ₹38.50. He recommends maintaining a strict stop-loss at ₹29.80 to manage downside risk, with the stock's movement towards these levels depending on buying momentum and overall market sentiment.
