The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Shri Suman Ray as Executive Director (ED) with effect from September 1, 2026. According to the central bank's announcement, Ray brings over three decades of dedicated service to the RBI, having worked across several key areas including currency management, financial inclusion, payment and settlement systems, consumer education and protection, and human resources. His previous role was as Regional Director for Maharashtra, where he gained extensive experience in regional banking operations. As per the RBI's press release, Ray has been serving as the Regional Director for Maharashtra before his promotion to the Executive Director position. Ray was among five senior officers who were promoted to the rank of executive director by the RBI earlier this year, joining Gunveer Singh, Monisha Chakraborty, Sudhakar Malli and Ravi Shankar in these key leadership roles.
As Executive Director, Ray will oversee the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the Premises Department. The DICGC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the RBI that provides insurance cover on bank deposits, currently up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, and administers credit guarantee schemes. Ray has also served as Secretary to the Western Area Local Board, one of RBI's four regional advisory boards that assist the central board on local matters. According to the RBI's official statement, Ray will look after the Department of Deposit Insurance & Credit Guarantee Corporation and Premises Department in his new role. The department Ray will now head plays a key role in overseeing this deposit insurance framework, which has come under sharper public focus in recent years following instances of bank failures and moratoriums.
This appointment follows a series of recent leadership changes at the RBI. Last month, the RBI appointed Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director (ED), who will look after the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department. As a career central banker, she has experience of over three decades in the RBI, having worked in the areas of supervision, foreign exchange, and government and bank accounts. In July, the RBI had appointed Ravi Shankar as its new Executive Director (ED), who continues to oversee the Department of Statistics and Information Management where he previously served as Adviser-In-Charge. RBI's executive directors are senior officials ranking just below the deputy governors and typically oversee two to three departments each, rotating portfolios periodically as part of the central bank's internal restructuring.
Ray's extensive career at the RBI spans over three decades across multiple critical banking functions. According to the central bank's statement, his experience encompasses currency management, financial inclusion initiatives, and the development of payment and settlement systems. His background also includes significant work in consumer education and protection, demonstrating his commitment to ensuring financial literacy and safeguarding consumer interests within the banking sector. As a career central banker, Ray has experience of over three decades in the Reserve Bank, having worked in several areas including Currency Management, Financial Inclusion, Payment and Settlement System, Consumer Education and Protection, and Human Resources.
