
Indian Bank has received board approval to open a representative office in Dubai as part of its strategic expansion into foreign markets. According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, the bank is leveraging the large Indian diaspora across West Asia to strengthen its international presence. The bank's MD and CEO Binod Kumar highlighted the significant opportunity, noting that about 33% of Dubai's working population is Indian, providing a substantial customer base for banking services. As reported by PTI, Kumar stated that "my aim now is to open a rep office in Dubai...We have a good number of non-resident Indians settled in Dubai." The bank is currently in the process of seeking regulatory approvals for the Dubai representative office while simultaneously evaluating expansion into Malaysia and Indonesia.
Indian Bank currently operates an international branch in Singapore and maintains branches in Colombo and Jaffna, Sri Lanka. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the bank also operates an IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) functioning as an offshore/foreign branch from GIFT City, Gandhinagar. The bank's GIFT City branch has been generating positive business results, including participation in various syndicated loans, supporting the rationale for further international expansion. Kumar noted that "We are getting good business from our GIFT City branch, including participation in various syndicated loans."
Beyond Dubai, Indian Bank is exploring opportunities for presence in Malaysia and Indonesia. According to Kumar's statements to PTI, the bank is in the process of seeking regulatory approvals for the Dubai representative office while simultaneously evaluating expansion into these additional markets. The bank's international expansion strategy focuses on regions with significant Indian populations to maximize business opportunities.
On the domestic front, Indian Bank plans to add 100 branches this year with a primary focus on increasing presence in central and western parts of the country. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Kumar confirmed that "Last year, we opened 100 branches. This year too, we have similar plans. Just on August 15, which was our foundation day, the bank inaugurated 15 branches across the country." The bank had 6,003 domestic branches as of June 30, 2026. The bank also plans to increase its headcount by approximately 2,500 personnel, including specialist officers, to manage growing business needs and replace retiring employees.
The seventh-biggest public sector bank has enhanced its presence in the eastern region and Uttar Pradesh through the amalgamation of Allahabad Bank in 2020. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the bank is now focusing on increasing its presence in central and western parts of the country, building on its established eastern and UP operations to create a more balanced national footprint. The bank's strategy involves leveraging its established international presence while expanding domestically to strengthen its overall market position.
