Federal Bank delivered exceptional Q1 FY27 results with net profit surging 36.50% year-on-year to ₹1,177 crore, significantly outperforming the previous year's ₹862 crore. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the strong performance was driven by robust net interest income growth and reduced provisions. Net interest income rose 26% to ₹2,946 crore compared to ₹2,337 crore in the year-ago period, while gross advances increased 15% to ₹2.81 trillion. The bank's net interest margin improved to 3.33% from 2.94% in the previous year, with Managing Director and CEO KVS Manian noting that "our profit grew nearly 37% in a period when treasury had a challenging period, which tells you that the earnings are coming from the core business, not from market gains."
Federal Bank is leveraging the Reserve Bank of India's relaxed foreign currency non-resident bank (FCNR-B) deposit scheme to strengthen its funding base and support credit growth. According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, the bank has non-resident (NRE/NRO) deposits exceeding ₹1 trillion, or roughly 31% of its total deposits of ₹3.2 trillion. Managing Director and CEO KVS Manian confirmed early flows under the scheme, with the bank offering leverage in the range of 8-12 times for eligible customers. The scheme, announced on 5 June and valid till 30 September, allows banks to raise FCNR-B deposits of three to five years and swap the dollars with the RBI at a concessional rate. During the latest Q1 FY27 media call, Manian indicated the bank expects to benefit from fresh inflows into FCNR deposits in the September quarter, stating "We see FCNR(B) deposits as a significant opportunity over the next quarter. We are working on various arrangements, both for customer leverage and on our own International Banking Unit (IBU) balance sheet." The bank has not raised any FCNR deposits so far under the latest window but expects to secure its share of the market, with Manian noting "We believe Federal Bank has a meaningful market share in this business and expect to secure our fair share of the inflows."
Federal Bank expects most FCNR inflows to come from West Asia, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong, while demand from the US, UK and Australia is likely to remain limited due to tax considerations. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, the bank is in various stages of organizing leverage for customers as well as leverage on its own ISFCA banking unit balance sheet. Manian stated the bank expects to get a fair share of market share on this opportunity, with the bank seeing strong interest for placing fresh FCNR deposits from NRIs in the Middle East, Singapore and Hong Kong. The bank has non-resident (NRE/NRO) deposits exceeding ₹1 trillion, or roughly 31% of its total deposits of ₹3.2 trillion, and FCNR deposits would supplement rather than replace its existing funding strategy. During the Q1 FY27 media call, Manian emphasized the bank's measured approach, stating "We are not offering very high leverage. Our leverage will be around 8-10 basis points." He also noted the bank is not chasing deposits aggressively by offering elevated rates.
Federal Bank has secured its inaugural 'BBB-' international issuer rating from S&P Global, making it the fifth Indian private sector bank with such a rating. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the bank's board has approved raising funds up to ₹10,000 crore through debt instruments on a private placement basis. While the lender is not committing to an issuance yet, Manian said the bank is prepared to raise funds under the RBI's temporary relaxation on external commercial borrowings. During the Q1 FY27 media call, Manian reiterated the bank's readiness, stating "We are prepared from a regulatory and ratings perspective and remain ready to access the overseas market. The current window remains open until December, and we will monitor market conditions and pricing. If raising funds overseas makes economic sense, we will pursue it." The bank is ready to access overseas borrowings through the external commercial borrowing (ECB) route if market conditions become attractive.
Federal Bank's asset quality showed significant improvement with net NPA at 0.18%, the lowest in its recent history compared to 0.48% in the year-ago quarter. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, gross NPAs improved to 1.52% of gross advances from 1.91% in June 2025, while provision coverage ratio stands at 87%. Loan loss provisions declined 28% year-on-year to ₹274 crore, and income tax outgo was lower at ₹461 crore compared to ₹614 crore in the previous year. Total deposits rose 11.37% to ₹3.20 lakh crore, with low-cost CASA deposits composition improving to 32.23% of total deposits against 30.35% in the year-ago quarter. Among business segments, commercial banking grew 22.96%, commercial vehicle and construction equipment finance increased 21.07%, gold loans surged 33%, loans against property rose 21%, and credit cards grew 36% on year. The bank maintained its guidance for mid-teen loan growth in FY27 and reiterated its expectation of net interest margin expansion of 5-6 basis points over the next few quarters.
