Banking operations across several Indian states will be disrupted this week due to a four-day consecutive closure period from September 12-15, 2026. The holiday schedule includes the second Saturday (September 12), Sunday (September 13), and state-specific festivals. Banks in several states will remain closed for three to four consecutive days this week, with the closure period extending from Saturday through Tuesday. Customers who have important work at their branch should plan it in advance to avoid inconvenience, as banking services could be affected even if banks remain technically open during the strike period. As per the latest reports, the closure is uniform across all states and union territories, with no regional exceptions, as second and fourth Saturdays are treated as mandatory off days for banks nationwide under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
Bank employees are observing a nationwide strike on Friday, September 11, following a call by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The strike is expected to have its biggest impact on branch-based banking services, with several public sector banks alerting customers about possible disruption. The unions are seeking implementation of a five-day banking week, which was agreed upon in March 2024 but has not yet received final government notification. They have also raised issues relating to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) system and other employee-related matters. The September 11 strike and the September 12-15 weekend create a nationwide interruption to physical branch services, though digital banking remains operational. As per latest reports, public sector banks are expected to face the biggest disruption in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata, while major private sector banks are not directly part of the nationwide strike but may experience some delays due to disruptions in banking and cheque-clearing operations. The UFBU has also announced a three-day strike from September 28 to 30, indicating continued disruption ahead.
The holiday pattern varies by state, with Odisha and Goa observing an additional holiday on September 15 for Nuakhai/Ganesh Chaturthi, second day, creating the four-day consecutive closure from September 12-15. Banks in major cities including Mumbai, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Panaji, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Belapur, and Vijayawada will remain closed for the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday on September 14. However, September 14 is not a nationwide bank holiday - closures depend on the RBI-notified holiday calendar for specific states and cities. Customers should check their particular branch's holiday status rather than assuming all branches of a bank will be closed nationwide. For most locations where September 14 is not a bank holiday, Monday will be a normal working day, though some locations also have a bank holiday on September 15 due to regional festivals. The RBI's calendar also lists branches in Guwahati staying shut today for the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva, while September 14 and 15 bring closures tied to Ganesh Chaturthi and related observances in select centres.
Despite physical branch closures, customers can continue accessing essential banking services through digital channels. According to the latest reports, online banking, mobile apps, and UPI services remain operational nationwide during the holiday period. ATMs operate round-the-clock for cash withdrawals, while customers can use their bank's app for payments and transfers. The process of IMPS, NEFT and RTGS money transfers will also be completed during the holiday period. Customers can use UPI payments through apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm without interruption. Most regular banking activities can still be completed online without visiting a branch, though some transactions requiring manual processing may take longer. As per the latest updates, customers and students can continue using UPI, mobile banking apps, internet banking, ATMs, and debit and credit cards for most routine transactions even when physical branches are closed. The closure is limited to physical branches only, with digital banking channels functioning as usual.
The next major bank holiday is scheduled for September 14 when banks in multiple cities will remain closed for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. As reported by Mint, upcoming closures in September include holidays for Samvatsari, Unitarian Anniversary Day, and Karma Puja. The RBI's bank holiday calendar also lists Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva as a holiday in Guwahati on September 12. Customers are advised to check the RBI's holiday schedule or confirm with their local bank branch before planning visits to ensure smooth completion of banking tasks. The situation will continue into Monday, September 14, in several parts of the country, with some customers potentially seeing four consecutive days without access to physical bank branches. Beyond September, the fourth Saturday of the month, September 26, will be a nationwide holiday, while further regional holidays are listed through September 21-25 for occasions including Indrajatra and Karma Puja.
