Six small finance banks now offer 8% or more interest rates to senior citizens, significantly outpacing major public and private sector lenders. According to data shared by Stable Money as of June 24, 2026, the latest revision came from Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, which increased its FD rate to 7.8% for regular depositors and 8.3% for senior citizens on the two-year tenure. This revision has brought the total number of banks offering over 8% returns to senior citizens to six, highlighting the growing gap between small finance banks and larger lenders. As per Stable Money, Equitas Small Finance Bank currently offers the highest senior citizen rate of 8.5% for a three-year-and-one-day Maxima FD, while Shivalik Small Finance Bank offers 8.5% for deposits ranging from 23 months 1 day to 27 months. The data shows that small finance banks currently provide significantly higher returns than large public sector and private sector banks at their respective highest-rate tenures, particularly for depositors investing ₹5 lakh.
Shivalik Small Finance Bank currently offers the highest senior citizen rate of 8.5% on deposits ranging from 23 months 1 day to 27 months, earning ₹42,500 annually on a ₹5 lakh deposit. State Bank of India continues to offer 7.05% for five-year deposits earning ₹35,250 annually. The data shows that most large public sector banks remain below 7.5%, with the difference in returns remaining significant across categories. A senior citizen investing ₹5 lakh in Shivalik Small Finance Bank would earn ₹7,500 more annually than HDFC Bank and ₹7,250 more than SBI at their respective highest-rate tenures.
Among private sector banks, Bandhan Bank offers the highest senior citizen rate of 7.95% for a two-year deposit, earning ₹39,750 annually on a ₹5 lakh investment. Yes Bank and IndusInd Bank both provide 7.75% each, earning ₹38,750 annually for three-to-five-year deposits. Large private banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank continue to offer rates between 7% and 7.2%, with Axis Bank at 7.20% earning ₹36,000 annually on five-year deposits, ICICI Bank at 7.10% earning ₹35,500 annually, and HDFC Bank at 7.00% earning ₹35,000 annually.
The higher rates offered by small finance banks can substantially improve annual earnings for senior citizens. According to Stable Money analysis, a ₹5 lakh investment would earn an additional ₹7,500 annually at 8.5% versus 7% at the same tenure. For larger investments, a ₹10 lakh deposit would generate an additional ₹15,000 annually, while a ₹20 lakh investment would earn an extra ₹30,000 annually. These improvements are particularly significant for senior citizens who depend on interest income for their financial planning. The current rate environment favors small finance banks for senior citizens seeking higher returns, though experts recommend evaluating factors beyond returns before choosing a bank. Small finance banks dominate medium-term deposits, with Jana Small Finance Bank and Shivalik Small Finance Bank both offering 8% for three-year deposits, while SBI offers only 6.8% and HDFC Bank provides 6.95% for similar tenures.
